🆓💎 Using Your Voice to Advocate for Your Mental Health 🆓💎
Hello, Star Players! This week for Free Game Friday, we're building on our focus on Suicide Prevention Month to provide you with the tools to become an advocate for mental health. As a social impact enterprise, Celestial Content Creations is dedicated to empowering and uplifting our communities, and part of that is giving you the resources to protect your well-being. This article is inspired by the youth empowerment workshop we delivered in February at the Texas Alliance for Black School Educators (TABSE) Conference.

Our workshop entitled, Using The Power of Your Voice to Advocate for Your Mental Health was presented to a group of high schoolers to educate them on the signs and definitions of common mental health challenges. Attendees left empowered with the tools to check in with themselves and on loved ones who may be experiencing a mental health challenge as defined by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.
Now, I am pleased to pass these gems on to you, our Star Players! These tid-bits may be all you need to help save a life this September.
Mental health challenges are defined by a major change in a person's thinking, feeling, or behavior that interferes with their daily life and doesn't quickly go away. Catching the early signs can be critical. You may notice a loved one's appearance is more unkempt than usual, or they seem tired or disheveled. Their feelings might shift, and they may no longer enjoy hobbies or school activities they once loved. Changes in behavior, like showing up late or canceling commitments, or in thoughts, such as difficulty concentrating, can also be indicators.
If you see these signs, remember that speaking up is an act of empowerment. You can use helpful phrases like, “Something seems to be bothering you. Do you want to talk about it?” or “I am concerned about you”. Avoid unhelpful phrases like, “You'll feel different tomorrow” or “Pull yourself together”. Your voice matters, so use it to check in on yourself and others from a loving place.

Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength. If you or a loved one is in crisis, remember to use the available resources, such as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.
